NUTRITION CLASS
ENERGY BALANCE & ENERGY EXPENDITURE
ENERGY BALANCE ??
- Is the relationship between the energy intake (from food) with the energy expenditure (from activity)

-also refer as the amount of energy intake (from the food that we eat) and the amount of energy used up by the body through activity

-2 type of energy balance :

-
NEGATIVE energy balance (energy intake < energy expenditure)
-
POSITIVE energy balance (energy intake > energy expenditure)
ENERGY EQUILIBRIUM
- energy intake = energy expenditure
- important to maintain body weight

ENERGY INTAKE
- source of energy from food
- Type of energy (in form of calories)
-
Carbohydrate ( 4 cal/ g)
-
Protein (4 cal/ g)
-
Fat (9 cal/ g)
- Important for energy storage

ENERGY EXPENDITURE
- used up the energy for body, activity
- 3 general purpose
-
BMR (60-70 %)
-
TEF (5-10%)
-
Physical activity (20-35 %)

ENERGY STORAGE
- energy store at adipose tissue, muscle & liver

BASAL METABOLITE RATE (BMR)
- the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutral temperature and in the fasting state (>12 hours)
- ex: heart beat, respiration, organ activity
- standard BMR for person ;
-
women : 0.9 kcal/ kg/ hr
-
men : 1.0 kcal/ kg/ hr
-The different between women and men is the energy needed for muscle activity

HOW TO CALCULATE DAILY ENERGY NEEDED ???

Daily energy needed = WEIGHT x BMR x 24 hours

example :
Daily energy needed = 67 kg x 0.9 kcal/kg/hr x 24
= 1447.2
